Phthalates in baby care products

A study from University of Washington suggests that personal care products for babies, including lotion, shampoo and powder, caused elevated levels of phthalates in the youngsters, which can alter reproductive development. Phthalates may be found in fragrance and plastics, such as baby bottles. Although phthalates are rarely listed as an ingredient in personal care products, they are found in fragrance ingredients of these products.

Below is an excerpt from National Post:
"The University of Washington study looked at urine samples from 163 infants born between 2000 and 2005. Phthalates were detected in 81 per cent of the samples. The levels were highest in infants under the age of eight months. The levels increased as babies were exposed to more baby care products."

Next time you buy baby care products, read the label! Avoid chemicals such as Phthalates, synthetic Fragrances (use pure essential oils in place of 'Fragrance'), Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (a foaming agent found in toothpaste, shampoo, bubble bath, soap) as these chemicals have been linked to eczema, allergies, and possible reproductive problems.
